On April 2, 1956, a $35,000 bond issue was resoundingly voted down by North Platte city voters. Coincidentally or not, the election also saw three out of the four sitting councilmen get voted out in favor of a slate of candidates running on the platform of "tax reduction". North Platte, with a population of approximately 15,000 at the time, had just seen the demise of the semi-pro league that featured the North Platte Plainsmen, a team supported by local businessmen, most notably York Hinman. Hinman, a local truck stop owner, was also involved at a different time with a team called the Hinman Oilers.

At the April 4th council meeting, the newly formed group unanimously approved a proposal, presented by Dr. H. K. Young, to have the North Platte Baseball Association conduct a public subscription drive for bleachers to be placed at "the ball diamond site on city property across from Cody Park." Dr. Young emphasized to the City Council the North Platte Baseball Association fully understood that a successful drive would mean the

The Pecos League has agreed to a deal with Wells Fargo to be the official bank of the Pecos League. Wells Fargo has the most cities with a branch location in the league (Alamogordo, Roswell, Santa Fe, Raton and Las Vegas). Trinidad players will be able to access the Raton Branch and Taos players will be able to access the Santa Fe Branch. The Pecos League covers some very isolated areas and Wells Fargo is the only choice for the Northern Region of the League. Players, Umpires and Staff will also have option of being paid via direct deposit.

Wells Fargo will also be a team sponsor of the Las Vegas Train Robbers. Timing of payment is very important for players and with limited banking in some cities it is great to have Wells Fargo as a partner. Checks were always cut on time in 2011 and 2012 but getting to banks that honored the checks or charging players a fee to cash the checks were a problem. With Las Cruces no longer in the league the Pecos League lost Pioneer Bank which was bank from 2010-2012 for league and Vaqueros. Pioneer was a great partner and offered excellent service.

With Pecos League spring training now less than a month away, managers are finalizing their rosters, and we’ll take a look at each team, one day at a time. The one thing all coaches have confidence about is their players will be ready when the season starts.

LAS VEGAS

LAS VEGAS, N.M. — As a Pecos League expansion team, the Las Vegas Train Robbers got the first pick in the Pecos League Spring, and manager Casey Dill — definitely not new to the league — used it to good advantage.

Dill — who moves to Las Vegas from Las Cruces — picked Edison Alvarez, a pitcher from the Dominican Republic who spent two years with the Minnesota Twins organization and wrapped up the Spring League with a 2-1 record, 2.04 ERA and 34 strikeouts. (Not to mention a .321 batting average that included two home runs.)

“Edison, in my opinion, is the best player there,” Dill said. “The most projectability. He’s just a great guy. A great teammate. So I think we got a very, ve

It used to be that sports scorekeeping was a simple matter.

A scorekeeper used pen and paper to follow the game in a book, then transferred the team and players stats onto stat sheets, which were updated after every game. It was tedious, but not too complicated.

These days however, as with everything else, scorekeeping has become computerized and the Pecos League is no exception. League commissioner Andrew Dunn chose Pointstreak Sports Technologies (http://www.pointstreak.com/) — a company that scores eight sports from high school through the pros — as the system to use for the Pecos League. And while there have been growing pains, Pointstreak has pluses for everyone from the scorekeepers to the players to the fans.

Roswell Invader statistician Geoff Gunn said getting a package deal for the entire league made sense.

That way we’re all on the same system,” he said. “If every team is using same stats system, it make it a lot easier to effect changes; to get everybody on the same page

RATON — Folks in Raton have been disappointed in recent years with promises of big things that never materialized. In particular, a new racetrack and casino that was promised to replace the La Mesa racetrack, the state’s first racetrack, never came to town.

So Raton residents are justifiably a little leery about the move of the Osos from Ruidoso to Raton.

“The general feeling is there’s a little bit of skepticism, said Raton Parks and Recreation Director Jared Chatterly. “With a lot of things that have happened in Raton lately, there’s this big build up to big things that are going to happen and they don’t pan out.”

That aside, Chatterly said excitement about the Osos is growing, and he expects the team to be well supported once the players roll into town in early May.

“There’s a lot of support for baseball in the community. I think people are just kind of waiting to see if it will happen,” he said. “Things will start to roll and get exciting. People do know it can hap

After an off-season in which the Pecos League schedule saw numerous changes as teams came and went in the league, the season is finally set, with eight teams for 2013 and regular-season games running from May 14 to July 24.

After spring training in early May, four teams will play exhibition games against American Association teams El Paso and Amarillo.

Roswell will open up the exhibition season May 10 at Cohen Park in El Paso, then May 11, White Sands faces the DIablos in El Paso.

May 12, Las Vegas travels to Amarillo to face the Sox, then Alpine wraps up the exhibition season May 13 in El Paso.

The regular season kicks off with two games May 14, with the Cowboys traveling to White Sands and the Invaders hosting the Train Robbers. After that, it’s a busy season, with all eight teams playing daily through the rest of May and June (no days off) and from July 7 through 24.

The only break the players will get is the first week in July, when only July 3-4 will feature all eight teams

TAOS — The Blizzard will be a cross between a full-time team and a travel team in their first year in the Pecos League — with only about 16 home games on the schedule — but that doesn’t bother Taos facilities manager Marty Remaly.

“I think it’s good for the inaugural situation here just to get the word out,” he said. “Get all the logistics set up. Figure out parking and how we’re going to set up the field. For me, on my end, I’m glad, because I’m going to be coordinating all that. I’d rather take it slow the first year. So I’m kind of happy for that the first year.”

And even though they won’t have as many homes games as other teams, the Blizzard seem to have had the easiest introduction of any city in the league.

Remaly said baseball in Taos goes back almost 100 years, and 20 years ago when he moved to the ski mecca, he started a men’s adult and senior league. So after a possible team in the Rocky Mountain Baseball League never came about when that league folded, joining

In 1993, when the Rockies became a part of Major League Baseball, everyone was forced to take a look at the effect altitude had on baseball. Both in Mile High Stadium — where the Rockies played for two years — and Coors Field (5,277 feet), balls seemed to leave the park at a much quicker rate than at lower elevation fields.

Numerous studies confirmed that.

A 2003 study at the University of Northern Colorado proved balls hit at Coors Field carry farther than in any other stadium in the country. Jay Schaffer and Erik Heiny studied the effects of elevation on slugging percentages — the total number of bases divided by the number of at bats — in major league baseball. They found that the slugging percentage at Coors Field is about 9.2. percentage points higher than for stadiums at middle elevations (between 500 and 1,100 feet), and about 12.5 percentage points higher than at elevations below 500 feet. During the 2007 World Series between Colorado and Boston, a University of Illinois study compared baseball tr

The Pecos League is going back to the basics this year, with two changes that bring to mind the days of more traditional baseball.

One — the more controversial of the two — actually brings the league back to where it was during the first half of its opening season: a return to National League rules, with no designated hitter, meaning pitchers have to bat.

It’s been 40 years since the DH was introduced in the American League, and today, as Alpine manager Ryan Stevens points out, virtually no one except the National League plays without the DH.

"You"re going to be hard pressed to find anybody who does that, up until the major leagues in the National League,” he said.

Still, Pecos League commissioner Andrew Dunn said he decided to removed the DH for one simple reason.

“We went back to the National League rules because we never should have gone away from it,” he said. “It’s because the players at this level, especially the pitchers, who are our hottest commodities, want

SANTA FE — Umpires — indeed, officials of any sort — are generally met with a love-hate relationship by fans. But officials are a huge part of any sporting competition, and the Pecos League has been doing its best to bring a better quality of umpires to the ballparks every year.

This year is no exception.

"The umpiring will be improved,” said commissioner Andrew Dunn.

The league will be bringing back umpires who "were widely known as the best umpires in the league,” Dunn said, as well as adding others from umpire school.

Leading the officiating crew in the north — Santa Fe, Las Vegas, Taos, Raton and Trinidad, Colo. — will be David Crawford, who’s been calling plays, he said, since he was 16 years old.

“I started with the little 6- and 7-year-olds and moved up every year,” he said. “And I just kind of keep moving up.”

He’s been a Division II umpire with the for Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference for four years, calling games for such schools as

The Pecos League is pleased to announce ist first round of full time umpires. David Crawford and Edward Padilla will be full time Northern Division umpires. Both are from Santa Fe and are full time teachers. Crawford teaches at DeVargas Middle School in Santa Fe. Padilla teaches at Pinon Elementary in Santa Fe. Crawford and Padilla were rovers in the 2012 and worked 20 games. They were the leagues best umpires by far.

Bill Moore from the Santa Fe Fuego: "They were best umpires in the league. They are as good anybody in Arizona. They will do good work for the whole league. These guys pay attention and listen. This is a great upgrade for the league. Everyone that had them in Santa Fe said, "Where have these guys been all year?""

Steve Liddell and Jim Sayer of Las Cruces will be Southern Rovers and will work Alamogordo home games and Deming games if the Pecos League plays a regular season series in Deming. Liddell and Sayer have been well known as the best umpires in the Pecos League and the 2010 Continental League.

The Pecos League will hire two more full time crews and retain Steve Liddell"s Las Cruces crew as Southern Rovers for Alamogordo/Roswell.
With the Pecos League not deciding to return to Las Cruces and wanting to keep Liddell"s crew, the Pecos League will go with a Northern Rover crew when White Sands is on the road. The Northern rovers will consist of Santa Fe umpires Danny Lujan, Matt Martinez, Richard Salazar and Eric Lujan.)

Anyone who’s familiar with the Continental Baseball League or Pecos League commissioner Andrew Dunn knows the story of the “CB” brand.

But even if you’re not, it’s a good story, especially since the CB will try to break what’s been an ongoing jinx when the Carlsbad Bats come back to the league in 2013.

“The story of the ‘CB’ has followed me everywhere I go,” Dunn said.

The story began in 2009, when Dunn was approached by Continental League founder Ron Baron and asked to put together a team three days before the season started after the Dallas Aviators had folded.

“He basically begged me to put (together) a travel team and help run and administer a travel team in the Continental League,” Dunn said.

Baron wanted to name the team the Texas Heat, but since Houston already had a team with that name, it wouldn’t work. So Dunn named the squad the Coastal Kingfish, after Coastal Baseball Park, which he owns, and the Kingfish, after the ECHL hockey team he’d wor
