Pecos League settles numbers off the field.
The 2013 season is complete. Below is the report of the 2013 Pecos League Teams.
1. Roswell Invaders-The Roswell Invaders returned to the model franchise in 2013 that they were in 2011. The Invaders ran the table in the Pecos League winning the title was just the beginning. The City of Roswell met all of the Invaders needs and helped run the Pecos League"s best team. The team lead the league in Merchandise Sales for the 3rd year in a row. The Invaders met community expectations with their new coaching staff. The Invaders new coaching staff turned the team around overnight. The Invaders set a Pecos League Record for regular season wins. The Invaders even have their own section in the famed UFO Museum. Roswell finally got local newspaper coverage and has full buy in from all members across community. The Invaders Fans are already looking forward to 2014.
2. Trinidad Triggers-The Triggers had a great second year. This year will always be remembered as the year of the Reality TV Show. The TV Show followed the Triggers everywhere. Similar to Alpine the Triggers sold their own concessions. When the show airs it will make or break the Triggers and the City of Trinidad. The Triggers had the best off the field operation in the Pecos League with Kim Schultz at the helm. JD Droddy improved relations with TSJC and Central Park. The Triggers have made the playoffs both years the four seed. Trinidad has become a stable city in the Pecos League where players want to play. This despite all of the unstable moves in the off season between the Triggers, the City and TSJC. The Triggers have paved the way for the Pecos League in Colorado.
3. Raton Osos-The Raton Osos were the biggest surprise in the Pecos League. Despite having one of the worst teams in Pecos League history on the field the community embraced the Osos. The Million Dollar Gabriele Field served its purpose as on of the Pecos Leagues best places to watch a game. Jared Chatterley was the key local leader who kept everything in order in Raton. Raton set the model for small town baseball. The Osos provided a huge spark to Raton"s summer economy by providing road team housing for both Trinidad and Raton at the famous Village Inn. Raton"s ballpark played great and in 2014 the Osos look forward to launching their beer garden. Raton"s operation ran very smoothly for a Pecos League Expansion Team. In 2014 Raton has a goal for getting to the .500 mark.
4. Alpine Cowboys-The Alpine Cowboys had another solid year in the Pecos League. For the third year in a row the Cowboys made the playoffs. Expectations are high in the West Texas Town of Alpine. The Cowboys took a major step forward taking over their own concessions. In 2014 the Cowboys will look forward to another Southern Division to balance their scheduling.
5. Santa Fe Fuego-The Fuego had a solid 2nd year. Despite slow early crowds, the Fuego fans really picked up as the Fuego made their playoff push. Their biggest crowd was the All-Star Game and the crowds were solid in June and July. With Taos not having home games the Fuego had too many early home games in a row. In 2014 a balanced schedule will help the Fuego. The Beer Garden will be removed in 2014 as well. The die hard baseball fans want a winner in Santa Fe. They have played two years with a trip to the playoffs. The City of Santa Fe installed a beautiful scoreboard and PA System. There are rumors that they will somehow extend the right field fence into the ravine. Regardless Santa Fe is a great Pecos League City with great fans, a great newspaper and a beautiful ballpark.
6. White Sands Pupfish-The Pupfish moved forward in 2013 installing misters and having the best playing surface in the league. The Pupfish had another disapointing year on the field. A failed attempt with a player/manager and older players never let the Pupfish even consider playoffs. Fans are seeking a team that is younger and can get into the playoffs. The Fish lost so many games early they were out of the race. Roswell completely dominated the Pupfish winning 14 of 16 games against the Pupfish, this caused many Pupfish Fans to wear Navy and Lime. The team didn"t qualify for the playoffs again and the Pupfish really miss their local rivals in Ruidoso and Las Cruces. In 2014 the Pupfish would benefit from having another Southern Division Team. They were front loaded with home games in the month of May. A balanced schedule would be appreciated. The season was still a good one in Alamogordo. The Air Force Base had several great nights and with a team that can be .500 in 2014 the Fish will fill the stands. Griggs Park was probably the best playing surface in the league. The Fish will be fighting uphill being in a three team division with Alpine and Roswell.
7. Las Vegas Train Robbers-In the short history of the Pecos League, Las Vegas was by far the most challenging location of all of the cities. Las Vegas New Mexico population 12,000 got overloaded with baseball players in the summer of 2013. There were as many as 75 players living in Las Vegas at once. Las Vegas had both the Taos Blizzard and Las Vegas Train Robbers as full time residents. The City of Las Vegas was dealt with a lot of challenges. The Train Robbers made it all the way to end losing the championship series to Roswell.
It was a rough go for the Train Robber players to say the least.
In the beginning of the season the playing surface was deemed unplayable. Grass clumps in the outfield made the surface unsafe for players. Host Families were a huge problem as well. Unlike Raton, the Team didn"t generate close to enough revenue to run a team properly. This caused a whirlwind of problems for the players. Las Vegas was dead last in attendence but the Train Robbers won the division and was hosted the first round of the playoffs. Monsoon rains swept Northern New Mexico flooding their field. The City and New Mexico Highlands stepped up again allowing the Train Robbers to play their series at New Mexico Highlands University. The City of Las Vegas met everything that was asked of them and helped in any way they could but it was a huge learning experience. Las Vegas will alot of adjustments to their budget and operation to have a successful team in 2014.
8. Taos Blizzard-The Taos Blizzard played daytime baseball in 2013. There is a bond to pass lights that would allow for games to be played at night. Daytime baseball won"t work in Taos and there will not be a team if there aren"t lights. The fans that did attend the games love the Pecos League and love the idea of actually having their own team not a travel team. The players that played for Taos had a tough travel schedule to say the least and they were forced to live in Las Vegas New Mexico. They played four series and Alpine. The local residents are thrilled with the Blizzard as long as there are lights. The Taos Tundra baseball field is by far the worse surface in the Pecos League and it is not even close.

The best of three Championship Seri
The best of three Championship Series begins tonight in Roswell New Mexico between the Northern Division Champion Las Vegas Train Robbers and the Southern Division Champion Alpine Cowboys. The two teams opened the regular season with a five game series against each other. The games were tight games that were all decided by bullpen and all five games were won by Roswell.
In the Northern Division playoffs Gary Stauff and Randy Wells lead the Train Robbers offensively in their series against Trinidad. Each had three hit games and with Edison Alvarez and Atsushi Hebisawa on the mound for the Train Robbers that lead to an easy sweep of Trinidad. Now the Train Robbers will send Greg Fowler and Eddie Medina to the mound against the Invaders. The Train Robbers may have a better offense than the Invaders.
In the Southern Division playoffs Vinny Mejia and Dallas Burke carried the Invaders. Burke had several clutch hits including a bases clearing double in Game 1. Mejia homered twice in Game 2 and is the charge of the Invaders Lineup. Eric Lambe and Steve Sanguliano gave the Invaders quality starts and the bullpen combo of Ryan Rogers, Eric Berkowitz, Jacob Cook and Davis Henderson held down the tough Alpine Cowboys Club.
If the games come down to bullpen again Roswell has the advantage, Las Vegas will need to outscore the Invaders early.

Jul 27 2013 12:00AM

Trinidad Triggers will play the Las Vegas Train Robbers
Edison Alvarez will face Tony Smith in Game 1 which will be in Trinidad. Las Vegas manager Casey Dill has had huge success in Colorado in his two years in the Pecos League. The Train Robbers have owned the Triggers in Central Park going 6-8 there this year. Game 1 is in Colorado while games two and three are in Las Vegas. Trinidad finally clinched their playoff birth on the last day of the season by beating Raton 2-1 in a rain shortened game.
Southern Division
Alpine Cowboys at Roswell Invaders
All three games at New Mexico Fairgrounds Roswell, New Mexico. This matchup was set in Spring Training when the division alignment was finalized. The two teams have been the two best teams in the Pecos League since the inception of the Pecos League. These are the only two teams to ever win a Pecos League Championship. They met in 2011 when Roswell won game three on late inning home run by Brian Ramirez when it appeared Alpine had sealed the game. This year is no different Roswell will go with Eric Lambe who is 10-0 and has been dominant in the Pecos League. Alpine will counter with Brian Smith who has been one of the only pitchers to completely shut out Roswell this season. Game two could feature Roswell"s Steve Sanguliano and Alpine"s Shane Youngdale who have both been great this year. This will be a great series regardless of who wins. Recent Monsoon rains in Southeastern New Mexico has been a problem and could delay the series.
The two winners will meet and soon a new Pecos League Champion will be crowned.
The Alpine Cowboys beat the Roswell Invaders 6-2 behind Logan Lottis home run and Noah Piard pitched six innings and held the Invaders to two runs. Joel Carranza had two hits and two runs. Logan Lotti had a home run and two runs scored.
The win put the Cowboys a full game ahead of the Las Vegas Train Robbers for homefield advantage should the two teams meet in the 2nd round. The win also snapped a 14 game winning streak that date back to July 3rd when Roswell lost a game at Las Vegas.

The Santa Fe Fuego swept a doubleheader at Fort Marcy Park in Santa Fe on Saturday Night.
After winning the first game 5-3 the Fuego sent Kevin Camacho to the mound, he responded with 7 solid innings and only three runs surrendered. The Fuegos neighbors to the North the Taos Blizzard countered with a solid 7 inning performance from Rodney Tafoya. Tafoya pitched for the Fuego in 2012 and was attempting to play spoiler role for the Blizzard. Ryne Sonberg lead Taos with two hits. Kyle Kingsley pitched two solid innings for the Taos Blizzard. Steve Taft got the loss for Taos in the 10th inning.
Charlie Calamia had two doubles for the Fuego. The Fuego are exactly one game behind the Trinidad Triggers who beat White Sands in Alamogordo. Both teams have four games left to go. Santa Fe is at Taos on Sunday for the last home game of the year for the Blizzard. Trinidad has two more games in White Sands before heading home to finish with Raton.

ERA matches Standings in the Pecos League
When you analyze the Stats in the Pecos League you are often amazed at one side the offensive numbers are. The Roswell Invaders set the all time Pecos League Regular Season wins record. When you look closely at the Invaders you will notice two interesting facts.
#1 The Invaders were dead last in stolen bases and stolen base attempts the Invaders only stole 77 bases on 97 attempts
#2 The Invaders have a team ERA of 4.64 which is unbelievable for Pecos League Standings, this is the lowest Team ERA in league History. This is also how the team was a 50 win team.
But one thing is baseball at any level from MLB to the Pecos League teams with the lowest ERA will be in first place almost every time.
At the MLB Level currently the top 5 Teams in Team ERA as follows:
Pittsburgh 3.09
Atlanta 3.30
St Louis 3.42
Cincinnati 3.42
Washington 3.57
All of these are National League Teams that are either in first or second place in their respective division.
The Pecos League is no different. The current four playoff teams are the four teams with the lowest team ERAs.
2013 Pecos League Team ERAs
Roswell 4.64
Las Vegas 4.74
Trinidad 5.79
Alpine 5.82
White Sands 6.10
Santa Fe 6.77
Taos 8.00
Raton 8.89
In the 2012 season it was no different Las Cruces and Alpine lead the Pecos League in Team ERA and wound up meeting in Championship Series
Alpine 5.23
Las Cruces 6.41
White Sands 7.14
Roswell 7.22
Trinidad 7.79
Santa Fe 8.48
In the 2011 season Alpine and Roswell were clearly the class of the Pecos League, they finished 1 and 2 in ERA. Ruidoso was clearly the worst field to pitch in the history of the Pecos League, probably adding 1 point to team ERA. The Concrete infield and the altitude lead for a hitters paradise.

Umpiring takes three giant steps forward in 2013 in the Pecos League.
The biggest improvement from 2012-2013 in the Pecos League has been the umpiring.
David Crawford has served as the Crew Chief.
David Kereazis, Steve Bartelstein, Drew Boatman and Charlie Byrd have served as full time umpires.
"The umpiring is drastically better than in 2012 and light years ahead of 2011." says Trinidad manager JD Droddy
"The full time guys have been great, this has been a great direction. " says manager Bill Moore of Santa Fe
"With Byrd, Boatman, Crawford, Padilla, Steve and David you know the game will unbiased and the umpires won"t be the issue.
We have had very little complaints this year about umpiring. Full time umpires is the way to go.
Crawford has done a great job coordinating the umpires." says Pecos League Commissioner Andrew Dunn

The Pecos League Playoff Race is almost over.
The South has been settled:
Roswell and Alpine will meet in the first round the only thing left to determine is where.
Both teams recently swept their opponents and they have eight games left head to head.
Roswell currently holds a five game lead on Alpine.
The North has Santa Fe clinging onto life.
The Las Vegas Train Robbers appear to be locked into a playoff spot with a 1.5 game lead over Trinidad and 12 of their last remaining games are against White Sands, Taos and Raton.
They end the season with a 2 game series with Santa Fe including a possible third makeup game if needed.
The only spot up for grabs appears to be between Santa Fe and Trinidad. The Fuego trail the Trinidad Triggers by 5.5 games with 17 games remaining. Santa Fe plays Trinidad head to head three games and then has a very favorable schedule playing Taos and Raton 9 times.
Trinidad has by far the toughest schedule with only two games against Raton and an eight game road trip to Alpine and Alamogordo back to back.

The Season is officially 1/3 complete and the Pecos League Playoff Race has begun.
The 2013 playoff format has two teams from the North and two teams from the South.
NORTHERN DIVISION
The Northern Divison is clearly a three dog race with Raton out of the race.
They are dead last in pitching, fielding a hitting although the have been competitive in recent games.
The Trinidad Triggers have fared well against Santa Fe but have yet to beat Las Vegas
The Las Vegas Train Robbers have done very well within their own division and would appear to be favorite to win the division. Their pitching has been suspect but they are developing a huge home field advantage at Rodriguez Park and they league the Northern Divison in Offense.
Their schedule sets up the best with several games against Taos and Raton.
The Santa Fe Fuego are by far the leagues most improved team. They have not fared well in head to head games with Trinidad and Las Vegas.
Unfortuntately for the Fuego they only play Las Vegas one more series. The head to head games with Trinidad could very well determine who is the second seed in the Northern Division.
The Raton Osos have little chance to make the playoffs. Willie Fredrick and Willie Casey are the only chance the Osos have at winning games.
When either of those two pitchers start. The Osos are currently upgrading their staff.
SOUTHERN DIVISION
The Roswell Invaders are 18-6 and would appear to make the playoffs if they played .500 baseball the rest of the way.
The Alpine Cowboys are 13-11 and have won the close games to keep ahead of White Sands.
The White Sands Pupfish are 10-14 and probably have the League"s best starting pitching.
They have lost several close games.
The Taos Blizzard are 8-15 but are in process of completely reloading their pitching staff.
The Blizzard lead the league in every offensive category. They are dead last in every pitching category.
The Blizzard must at least split head to head games against Alpine to get back in the race.
Alpine"s Bryce Weidman has the highest pitcher"s score of 62. Roswell"s Andrew Deeds has the highest hitters score of 59.

The greatest distance between two points isnt on a map. It is the space between the end of the last baseball season and beginning of the next. I remember the momentum shifting mid-stream in Game 3 of the championship round earning the Cowboys a 12-7 victory over Las Cruces. Looking at the league website, http://www.pecosleague.com/, to keep up with off-season happenings and relishing the large picture at the photo kiosk inside Morrison True Value of the presentation of the 2012 trophy by Commissioner Andrew Dunn helped bridge the gap.

Umpires get spring training to hone officiating skills

LAS VEGAS -- Pecos League players and managers werent the only athletes at spring training Tuesday in Las Vegas.
While the managers evaluated their players, and the players did the best they could to make sure theyd stay on the rosters, the eight Pecos League umpires were also at Brandt Field at New Mexico Highlands, honing their skills in preparation for the 2013 season.
We brought the umpires out here to let them see some games before our season starts, and evaluate them let them know what they need to work on as well, said head umpire David Crawford.
Crawford leads a crew that includes Harold Moya, Eric Lujan and Richard Salazar, from Santa Fe; Shawn Mowdy, Ruidoso; and Luis Biardo and Jeff Barela. Pecos League commissioner Andrew Dunn promises the officiating will be "much improved" in 2013, and Crawford said thats the reason for the extra training.
Thats the whole purpose. Getting guys out here. Seeing them. Giving them some advanced mechanics. Let them know what they need to work on. Stuff they need to look for at this level of baseball. And going from there.
Each of the umpires had a chance to see time behind the plate or in the field during the three games Tuesday, then, much as the players were critiqued by their managers, Crawford critiqued his crews.
Huddled together behind the temporary backstop where he watched the calls, Crawford gave advice on everything from calls theyd made to how to interpret rules to what color uniforms to buy to how to handle unhappy players and coaches.
And even though the games meant very little in the scheme of things, the players still showed they didnt always agree with the calls -- after one contested call, one manager told his players to remember that it was spring training, and they needed to keep the umpires on their side. Crawford said thats expected.
I think the players are doing OK, he said. Baseball is baseball. Its always going to be baseball, so the players are always going to have their own opinions as opposed to umpires. Thats just part of the game. So going from that, yeah. Im looking forward to having a good season with all these guys.
As well as with his crew, who Crawford agrees are a step up from last year.
Im pleased with the umpires that are going to be working this league as opposed to last year and all the problems that we had, he said. I feel weve got a little more experienced officials out here now. Guys who work the college summer leagues and college ball as well. So Im looking forward to the season. I think the umpires will do great.

LAS VEGAS, N.M. — It was a beautiful day at Highlands University Tuesday, as the five northern Pecos League teams came to Brandt Field for a trio of spring training scrimmages.
And it was a full day of baseball, as the host Train Robbers opened the day at 9 a.m. against Raton in a game that saw several dozen runs scored in a more than four-hour match. Trinidad and Santa Fe faced off in the middle game, with Las Vegas coming back for the nightcap against Taos — a game that ended a bit early as darkness began to fall on the unlighted field.
With a few fans from each of the teams in attendance, along with the entire cadre of Pecos League umpires — conducting their own spring training — a reality television crew and various other onlookers, most managers used the day as a chance to evaluate their players while charting the pitching and hitting of the opposition.
Most threw a different pitcher each inning and rotated their fielders and hitters to give everyone a chance to show what they could

On April 2, 1956, a $35,000 bond issue was resoundingly voted down by North Platte city voters. Coincidentally or not, the election also saw three out of the four sitting councilmen get voted out in favor of a slate of candidates running on the platform of "tax reduction". North Platte, with a population of approximately 15,000 at the time, had just seen the demise of the semi-pro league that featured the North Platte Plainsmen, a team supported by local businessmen, most notably York Hinman. Hinman, a local truck stop owner, was also involved at a different time with a team called the Hinman Oilers.
At the April 4th council meeting, the newly formed group unanimously approved a proposal, presented by Dr. H. K. Young, to have the North Platte Baseball Association conduct a public subscription drive for bleachers to be placed at "the ball diamond site on city property across from Cody Park." Dr. Young emphasized to the City Council the North Platte Baseball Association fully understood that a successful drive would mean the

The Pecos League has agreed to a deal with Wells Fargo to be the official bank of the Pecos League.
Wells Fargo has the most cities with a branch location in the league (Alamogordo, Roswell, Santa Fe, Raton and Las Vegas).
Trinidad players will be able to access the Raton Branch and Taos players will be able to access the Santa Fe Branch.
The Pecos League covers some very isolated areas and Wells Fargo is the only choice for the Northern Region of the League.
Players, Umpires and Staff will also have option of being paid via direct deposit.
Wells Fargo will also be a team sponsor of the Las Vegas Train Robbers.
Timing of payment is very important for players and with limited banking in some cities it is great to have Wells Fargo as a partner.
Checks were always cut on time in 2011 and 2012 but getting to banks that honored the checks or charging players a fee to cash the checks were a problem.
With Las Cruces no longer in the league the Pecos League lost Pioneer Bank which was bank from 2010-2012 for league and Vaqueros.
Pioneer was a great partner and offered excellent service.

LAS VEGAS, N.M. — As a Pecos League expansion team, the Las Vegas Train Robbers got the first pick in the Pecos League Spring, and manager Casey Dill — definitely not new to the league — used it to good advantage.
Dill — who moves to Las Vegas from Las Cruces — picked Edison Alvarez, a pitcher from the Dominican Republic who spent two years with the Minnesota Twins organization and wrapped up the Spring League with a 2-1 record, 2.04 ERA and 34 strikeouts. (Not to mention a .321 batting average that included two home runs.)
“Edison, in my opinion, is the best player there,” Dill said. “The most projectability. He’s just a great guy. A great teammate. So I think we got a very, ve

It used to be that sports scorekeeping was a simple matter.
A scorekeeper used pen and paper to follow the game in a book, then transferred the team and players stats onto stat sheets, which were updated after every game. It was tedious, but not too complicated.
These days however, as with everything else, scorekeeping has become computerized and the Pecos League is no exception. League commissioner Andrew Dunn chose Pointstreak Sports Technologies (http://www.pointstreak.com/) — a company that scores eight sports from high school through the pros — as the system to use for the Pecos League. And while there have been growing pains, Pointstreak has pluses for everyone from the scorekeepers to the players to the fans.
Roswell Invader statistician Geoff Gunn said getting a package deal for the entire league made sense.
That way we’re all on the same system,” he said. “If every team is using same stats system, it make it a lot easier to effect changes; to get everybody on the same page

RATON — Folks in Raton have been disappointed in recent years with promises of big things that never materialized. In particular, a new racetrack and casino that was promised to replace the La Mesa racetrack, the state’s first racetrack, never came to town.
So Raton residents are justifiably a little leery about the move of the Osos from Ruidoso to Raton.
“The general feeling is there’s a little bit of skepticism, said Raton Parks and Recreation Director Jared Chatterly. “With a lot of things that have happened in Raton lately, there’s this big build up to big things that are going to happen and they don’t pan out.”
That aside, Chatterly said excitement about the Osos is growing, and he expects the team to be well supported once the players roll into town in early May.
“There’s a lot of support for baseball in the community. I think people are just kind of waiting to see if it will happen,” he said. “Things will start to roll and get exciting. People do know it can hap

After an off-season in which the Pecos League schedule saw numerous changes as teams came and went in the league, the season is finally set, with eight teams for 2013 and regular-season games running from May 14 to July 24.
After spring training in early May, four teams will play exhibition games against American Association teams El Paso and Amarillo.
Roswell will open up the exhibition season May 10 at Cohen Park in El Paso, then May 11, White Sands faces the DIablos in El Paso.
May 12, Las Vegas travels to Amarillo to face the Sox, then Alpine wraps up the exhibition season May 13 in El Paso.
The regular season kicks off with two games May 14, with the Cowboys traveling to White Sands and the Invaders hosting the Train Robbers. After that, it’s a busy season, with all eight teams playing daily through the rest of May and June (no days off) and from July 7 through 24.
The only break the players will get is the first week in July, when only July 3-4 will feature all eight teams

TAOS — The Blizzard will be a cross between a full-time team and a travel team in their first year in the Pecos League — with only about 16 home games on the schedule — but that doesn’t bother Taos facilities manager Marty Remaly.
“I think it’s good for the inaugural situation here just to get the word out,” he said. “Get all the logistics set up. Figure out parking and how we’re going to set up the field. For me, on my end, I’m glad, because I’m going to be coordinating all that. I’d rather take it slow the first year. So I’m kind of happy for that the first year.”
And even though they won’t have as many homes games as other teams, the Blizzard seem to have had the easiest introduction of any city in the league.
Remaly said baseball in Taos goes back almost 100 years, and 20 years ago when he moved to the ski mecca, he started a men’s adult and senior league. So after a possible team in the Rocky Mountain Baseball League never came about when that league folded, joining

In 1993, when the Rockies became a part of Major League Baseball, everyone was forced to take a look at the effect altitude had on baseball. Both in Mile High Stadium — where the Rockies played for two years — and Coors Field (5,277 feet), balls seemed to leave the park at a much quicker rate than at lower elevation fields.
Numerous studies confirmed that.
A 2003 study at the University of Northern Colorado proved balls hit at Coors Field carry farther than in any other stadium in the country. Jay Schaffer and Erik Heiny studied the effects of elevation on slugging percentages — the total number of bases divided by the number of at bats — in major league baseball. They found that the slugging percentage at Coors Field is about 9.2. percentage points higher than for stadiums at middle elevations (between 500 and 1,100 feet), and about 12.5 percentage points higher than at elevations below 500 feet.
During the 2007 World Series between Colorado and Boston, a University of Illinois study compared baseball tr

The Pecos League is going back to the basics this year, with two changes that bring to mind the days of more traditional baseball.
One — the more controversial of the two — actually brings the league back to where it was during the first half of its opening season: a return to National League rules, with no designated hitter, meaning pitchers have to bat.
It’s been 40 years since the DH was introduced in the American League, and today, as Alpine manager Ryan Stevens points out, virtually no one except the National League plays without the DH.
"You"re going to be hard pressed to find anybody who does that, up until the major leagues in the National League,” he said.
Still, Pecos League commissioner Andrew Dunn said he decided to removed the DH for one simple reason.
“We went back to the National League rules because we never should have gone away from it,” he said. “It’s because the players at this level, especially the pitchers, who are our hottest commodities, want

SANTA FE — Umpires — indeed, officials of any sort — are generally met with a love-hate relationship by fans. But officials are a huge part of any sporting competition, and the Pecos League has been doing its best to bring a better quality of umpires to the ballparks every year.
This year is no exception.
"The umpiring will be improved,” said commissioner Andrew Dunn.
The league will be bringing back umpires who "were widely known as the best umpires in the league,” Dunn said, as well as adding others from umpire school.
Leading the officiating crew in the north — Santa Fe, Las Vegas, Taos, Raton and Trinidad, Colo. — will be David Crawford, who’s been calling plays, he said, since he was 16 years old.
“I started with the little 6- and 7-year-olds and moved up every year,” he said. “And I just kind of keep moving up.”

Anyone who’s familiar with the Continental Baseball League or Pecos League commissioner Andrew Dunn knows the story of the “CB” brand.
But even if you’re not, it’s a good story, especially since the CB will try to break what’s been an ongoing jinx when the Carlsbad Bats come back to the league in 2013.
“The story of the ‘CB’ has followed me everywhere I go,” Dunn said.
The story began in 2009, when Dunn was approached by Continental League founder Ron Baron and asked to put together a team three days before the season started after the Dallas Aviators had folded.
“He basically begged me to put (together) a travel team and help run and administer a travel team in the Continental League,” Dunn said.
Baron wanted to name the team the Texas Heat, but since Houston already had a team with that name, it wouldn’t work. So Dunn named the squad the Coastal Kingfish, after Coastal Baseball Park, which he owns, and the Kingfish, after the ECHL hockey team he’d wor

The Pecos League is pleased to announce ist first round of full time umpires.
David Crawford and Edward Padilla will be full time Northern Division umpires. Both are from Santa Fe and are full time teachers.
Crawford teaches at DeVargas Middle School in Santa Fe.
Padilla teaches at Pinon Elementary in Santa Fe.
Crawford and Padilla were rovers in the 2012 and worked 20 games. They were the leagues best umpires by far.
Bill Moore from the Santa Fe Fuego:
"They were best umpires in the league. They are as good anybody in Arizona. They will do good work for the whole league. These guys pay attention and listen. This is a great upgrade for the league. Everyone that had them in Santa Fe said, "Where have these guys been all year?""
Steve Liddell and Jim Sayer of Las Cruces will be Southern Rovers and will work Alamogordo home games and Deming games if the Pecos League plays a regular season series in Deming.
Liddell and Sayer have been well known as the best umpires in the Pecos League and the 2010 Continental League.
The Pecos League will hire two more full time crews and retain Steve Liddell"s Las Cruces crew as Southern Rovers for Alamogordo/Roswell.
With the Pecos League not deciding to return to Las Cruces and wanting to keep Liddell"s crew, the Pecos League will go with a Northern Rover crew when White Sands is on the road. The Northern rovers will consist of Santa Fe umpires Danny Lujan, Matt Martinez, Richard Salazar and Eric Lujan.)

ALAMOGORDO — During the Pecos League"s inaugural year, the White Sands Pupfish were one of the leading teams in fan enthusiasm. While they lost to Ruidoso in the playoffs that year, that fan support — and support from the city of Alamogordo — was enough to give the ’Fish a second round of hosting the Pecos League All-Star game in 2012.
Unfortunately, an 0-8 start to the 2012 season dimmed some of that fan enthusiasm, enough to leave a sour taste in the mouth of outfielder Ernie Munoz, who spent all of 2011 in Alamogordo, then came back late in 2012 after a stint in the North American Baseball League.
"Being a part of everything in 2011, where White Sands and Roswell were pretty much the two places in the league that had great fan bases, I took it kind of personally last year, showing up to Alamogordo, and there being only 30 or 40 people in the stands," he said. "So one of my main objectives for this season is to fill the bleachers again. And we"re going to do that by bringing in very talented players and gettin
Every year when managers are named
Every year when managers are named and schedules are released fans love to make their predications:
Independent baseball is totally unpredictable and rosters aren"t set until the day before the season starts. Almost all posts have either Roswell or Alpine in first and Taos, Carlsbad in Last. In 2011 everyone picked White Sands to finish last and Las Cruces to win the league. White Sands finished 2nd and Las Cruces didn"t make the playoffs. In 2012 everyone picked White Sands to win the league and Las Cruces to finish last. Las Cruces almost won the league and White Sands didn"t make the playoffs.
Fans are invited to get their predications in on the leagues Facebook page. It will be next to impossible to predict the order of finish of ten teams but it is worth a try.
Here are some of the predictions from fans across the Pecos League from online emails and Facebook Posts:
