WICHITA, Kans. (September 2, 2017) – The
Wichita Wingnuts banged out 18 hits in support
of six brilliant innings from Eddie Medina, as
they rolled past the Salina Stockade 13-0 on
Saturday night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
After Medina fired a scoreless first, the
Wingnuts (59-38) scratched across a run in the
first against Salina starter Jordan Cummings
(1-7). Singles from Jacob Morris and Christian
Stringer preceded a fielder’s choice RBI
groundout from Brent Clevlen, giving the
Wingnuts a 1-0 lead.
Six more runs crossed the plate for Wichita in
the second, highlighted by run-scoring triples
from Leo Vargas and TJ Mittelstaedt. Jacob
Morris and Clevlen each notched RBI knocks as
well, stretching the advantage out to 7-0.
The onslaught continued in the fourth, with
Clevlen roping a double to plate one and Martin
Medina adding another on an RBI single for a 9-
0 Wingnuts lead. Clevlen’s double gave him 33
for the season, tying his own single-season
franchise record, set back in 2014.
Mittelstaedt tacked on another in the sixth
with an RBI single, and Brennen Salgado got in
on the act with a run-scoring single of his own
to make it 11-0.
Meanwhile, Medina (9-3) was in cruise control.
After allowing a leadoff single in the top of
the second, the right-hander retired 15
Stockade (18-80) hitters in a row on his way to
six shutout frames. Medina struck out five and
allowed just two hits, without handing out a
walk.
The final Wingnuts runs came home in the
seventh on a two-run homer from Mittelstaedt,
giving the designated hitter three hits and
five RBI for the night. Clevlen finished 4-for-
5 with four runs scored, while Stringer notched
three hits and reached base four times.
The Wingnuts and Stockade continue their series
on Sunday afternoon for game three of their
series, with first pitch scheduled for 1:05.
Tim Brown (3-5, 6.39) gets the start for
Wichita, while Salina counters with fellow
righty David Gates (1-1, 4.20). All the action
will be broadcast on 1410 AM/93.9 FM, and at
