Pecos League Ballparks By the Numbers: A History of Where the League Has Played

Since the Pecos League began play, its history has been written in ballparks across the United States. From historic stadiums in New Mexico and Texas to California, Arizona, Colorado, Kansas and beyond, Pecos League teams have played in a remarkable collection of professional, municipal, high school and college baseball facilities.

Some ballparks have served as long-term homes and have hosted hundreds of Pecos League games. Others appeared on the schedule for only a single game, a special event, a neutral-site matchup or a temporary home. Together, they tell the story of the league's geographic growth and the many communities that have hosted Pecos League baseball.

The 500-Game Club

Two ballparks stand above the rest by having hosted more than 500 games. Fort Marcy Ballpark in Santa Fe, New Mexico, leads the list with 507 games, followed closely by Joe Bauman Stadium in Roswell, New Mexico, with 502 games.

Kokernot Field in Alpine, Texas, is right behind them with 497 games. One of the most historic venues associated with the Pecos League, Kokernot Field is approaching the 500-game milestone.

Central Park in Trinidad, Colorado, has hosted 437 games, while Clint Lightner Field in Garden City, Kansas, rounds out the top five with 407.

California's Pecos League Ballparks

The league's expansion into California created another major chapter in its ballpark history. Sam Lynn Ballpark in Bakersfield leads the California venues with 346 games. It is followed by Albert Park in San Rafael with 199 and Joe DiMaggio Field in Martinez with 187.

California venues on the list stretch from Monterey and Santa Rosa to Dublin, Vallejo, Marysville, Lancaster and Southern California, illustrating how extensively the Pecos League has operated throughout the state.

Some of the Most Unusual Stops

Not every ballpark on the list was a traditional Pecos League home. Several represent unique moments in league history.

Alex Rodriguez Park at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida, hosted one game involving the Houston Apollos and FEP Cube. That appearance in South Florida represents one of the most geographically distant venues from the league's traditional Southwestern and Western footprint.

HODGETOWN in Amarillo, Texas, also appears with one game. The downtown Amarillo stadium hosted a spring training game between the Pecos Bills and Roswell Invaders. The game served as a makeup for a children's event scheduled by the Amarillo Sod Poodles, giving the two Pecos League clubs an opportunity to play at the professional stadium.

Kansas City also became part of the Pecos League map. Satchel Paige Stadium has hosted five games.

From One Game to More Than 500

The numbers demonstrate just how varied Pecos League baseball has been. A venue such as Fort Marcy has been the site of more than 500 games, while several other stadiums have hosted the league only once. Yet every one of those games represents another location added to the Pecos League's history.

The league's most established venues have developed identities closely connected to their teams. Fort Marcy and Santa Fe, Joe Bauman Stadium and Roswell, Kokernot Field and Alpine, Central Park and Trinidad, and Sam Lynn Ballpark and Bakersfield have become familiar combinations to Pecos League players and fans.

At the same time, the complete list illustrates the league's reach. Pecos League baseball has appeared at venues in New Mexico, Texas, Colorado, Kansas, California, Arizona, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Missouri and Florida.

From historic fields such as Kokernot Field and Warren Ballpark to modern professional facilities and small community parks, each ballpark has contributed a chapter to the Pecos League story. Some have hosted hundreds of nights of baseball. Others hosted one memorable game. Together, they form a ballpark history unlike that of almost any other independent baseball league.
