Sturgeon Rally for Seven in Eighth to Beat Amberjacks 7-5

June 2 2022 The Martinez Sturgeon scored seven runs in the eighth inning to defeat the Monterey Amberjacks 7-5. Martinez finished with nine hits and three errors, while Monterey collected 12 hits without an error. Monterey held a 5-0 lead through seven innings after scoring once in each of the second through fifth innings and again in the eighth. The Sturgeon erupted in the eighth to take the lead, with Kevin Johnson going 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Eduar Ramirez, Rafael Ramirez, Erik Estrada, James Portillo and Manny Corpas also drove in runs for Martinez, while Juan Garcia and Roberto Mejia each recorded an RBI. Braden Scrivner led Monterey with two hits and three walks, and Brenden Spaulding, Demetrio Rodriguez and Caleb Rosario each had two hits. Joe Johnson and Jordan Anderson contributed one RBI apiece, while Spaulding and Rosario also drove in runs. Neither team hit a home run; Martinez’s only extra-base hit was Rafael Ramirez’s double. Manny Corpas earned the win for Martinez after allowing one run on six hits in four innings, with two walks and four strikeouts. Michael Taylor started for the Sturgeon and allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits in three innings. Blake Svoboda delivered five scoreless innings for Monterey, permitting three hits and striking out seven, but Martinez’s eighth-inning outburst decided the game.
