Stephen Leonetti and Andrew Dunn were once batterymates in a game, and now they're teaming up again for a longer haul.
Leonetti will manage the San Rafael Pacifics of the Pecos League during the 2021 season and work directly with Dunn, the league commissioner and de facto team general manager.
Im thrilled to have the opportunity to work with the Pacifics, Leonetti said. I previously worked in southern California and the Central Coast, and I love California.
It will be great working with Andrew again, he added. I was the catcher in a game in which he pitched several years ago back on the east coast, so its interesting that were back together again, albeit in a different way. Its great to be back in baseball again.
The Woodbury, CT, native was pitching coach at Niagara University, but the team had to shut down its 2020 season early because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
We were in the airport in Pittsburgh and about to go play in Virginia when we got a call from the athletic director saying that everything was shutting down, he said.
His resume also includes coaching stints at the University of Connecticut, San Diego Mesa Junior College, Santa Barbara (CA) City College, Central Methodist (MO) University and the Alexandria (VA) Aces Collegiate Summer Baseball Club.
He also worked as an assistant coach with the Mystic Schooners of the New England Collegiate Baseball League in summers of 2016 and 2017, and the team won the NECBL title in 2016. While there, he coached the catchers and corner infielders, while also serving as assistant general manager.
Leonetti earned his undergraduate degree from Roger Williams University in 2010 and completed his masters degree at Milano School of Policy, Management and Environment, part of The New School in New York City.
