July 23 2017 The Tucson Saguaros overcame an early deficit to defeat the California City Whiptails 11-10. California City led 6-0 after three innings, but Tucson scored four runs in the fourth and two in the fifth to close the gap. The Whiptails answered with single runs in the fourth and fifth and two in the sixth to take a 10-6 lead.
Tucson seized control with four runs in the seventh and added another in the eighth. The Saguaros finished with 11 runs on seven hits, while California City collected 17 hits but could not hold its advantage. Tucson committed one error and California City made four.
Nicholas Vitale led Tucson with three hits, three RBI and two home runs. Fernando Garza added four RBI and a home run, while Darryl Baca also homered and drove in one run. California City’s Tino Mention went 4-for-5 with two RBI and a home run, and Tomas Gutierrez hit a home run and drove in two runs.
Redmond Floyd earned the win after allowing three hits and no runs in three innings while striking out five. Eric Morell started for Tucson and allowed 14 hits and 10 earned runs in six innings, with five strikeouts. Tomas Gutierrez struck out 10 in seven innings for California City but allowed 10 runs, including three earned, and Aldo Ferrante took the loss after surrendering the go-ahead run in the eighth.
