Behind Six-Run Third Inning
The Roswell Invaders continued rolling through the
2016 World Baseball Challenge with a 12-2 victory
over the Kamloops Sun Devils on August 17, 2016 at
Citizen Field in Prince George, British Columbia.
Roswell scored twice in the first inning, exploded
for six runs in the third and added four more in
the seventh to finish the game with 12 runs on 11
hits.
The Invaders immediately went to work against
Kamloops starter Austin Penner.
Morgan Blatnik opened the game with a double and
Cody Bishop followed with another double, scoring
Blatnik and giving Roswell a 1-0 lead.
After Cody Coffman grounded out, Joey Miller
lifted a sacrifice fly to center field that scored
Bishop and extended the advantage to 2-0.
Kamloops answered with one run in the bottom of
the first.
Brendan Hegel singled and Ian Horne walked before
Rob Morrison singled home Hegel, cutting Roswell's
lead to 2-1.
The Sun Devils tied the game in the second inning.
Jared Frew singled, stole second and scored when
Brad Bitz singled, making it 2-2.
That would be the last run Kamloops scored.
Roswell broke the game wide open in the top of the
third.
Brett Balkan reached on an error by the Kamloops
third baseman and Blatnik followed with a single
to center field that scored Balkan.
Bishop then delivered the biggest swing of the
inning, launching a two-run home run that scored
Blatnik and gave Roswell a 5-2 lead.
The Invaders weren't finished.
Coffman walked and Miller singled before Bobby
Webb struck out. Kaohu Gaspar then walked to load
the bases.
Jim Smith drew another walk, forcing Coffman home
and extending the advantage to 6-2.
After Nate Ferrell flied out, Balkan came to the
plate for the second time in the inning and
delivered a two-run single. Miller and Gaspar
scored, pushing the Roswell lead to 8-2.
Roswell sent 11 hitters to the plate in the inning
and scored six runs on four hits.
The 8-2 advantage proved more than enough for
Roswell starter Alex Dandridge.
Dandridge settled in after allowing runs in each
of the first two innings and shut Kamloops out
over the next three frames.
He completed five innings, allowing five hits and
two earned runs while walking two and striking out
six.
Roswell's bullpen was even better.
Nick Bozman took over in the sixth inning and
worked a scoreless frame without allowing a hit.
He walked three but struck out two and escaped
without damage.
Rob Rizzitelli then entered for the seventh and
struck out all three hitters he faced, retiring
Quinn Nesplack, Chris Clark and Owen Mohan in
order.
The Roswell offense added four insurance runs in
the top of the seventh.
Balkan walked and Bishop followed with another
walk. Coffman also walked, loading the bases with
two outs.
Miller then singled to right field, scoring Balkan
and Bishop and increasing Roswell's lead to 10-2.
Webb followed with a double to left field that
scored Coffman and Miller, producing the final two
runs of the game and giving Roswell a 12-2
advantage.
Bishop led one of Roswell's most balanced
offensive performances of the tournament.
He went 2-for-3 with a double, home run, three
runs scored, three RBIs and two walks.
Miller finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and
two RBIs while also producing Roswell's first-
inning sacrifice fly.
Blatnik went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs
scored, an RBI and a walk.
Webb added two hits, including a double, and drove
in two runs.
Balkan had a hit, scored twice and drove in two
runs, while Coffman reached base three times with
a hit and two walks and scored twice.
Roswell displayed remarkable patience at the plate
as well.
The Invaders drew 11 walks while striking out only
once. Every hitter in the Roswell lineup either
reached base, drove in a run or scored during the
victory.
Kamloops finished with five hits and struck out 11
times against the Roswell pitching staff.
Dandridge earned the victory while Austin Penner
took the loss for Kamloops.
The win improved Roswell's World Baseball
Challenge record to 5-1 and continued one of the
most impressive stretches in franchise history.
